Maroubra Duplex

R² Studios was tasked with designing two exceptional residences on a Maroubra site originally occupied by a single dwelling. The location on the high side of Sydney’s southern beaches suburb boasted stunning 180-degree views of the Pacific Ocean.

Our team’s goal was to capture the essence of the ocean, from its sounds and smells to its textures, through a dual occupancy solution that provided comfortable living spaces for a family of four, as well as additional independent accommodation for guests.

Our skilful planning of the duplexes allowed us to overcome the challenge posed by the site’s dual slope, resulting in residences that read as one with subtle differences to set them apart. Sculptural central staircases connect all three levels of each residence, with parents’ retreats enjoying the highest position, mid-level main living spaces opening up to the breathtaking views towards the ocean, and additional bedrooms and entertaining areas closer to the ground, with access to oversized pools and lush gardens.

To integrate with the geometry of the architectural expression, we opted for subdued materials, such as white face brick and off-form concrete elements, that ground the residence like a rock shelf does the ocean. We also incorporated overlapping curved balconies and roof canopies that mimic the movement of waves, further reflecting the stunning ocean views.

This project’s success reflects R² Studios’ skill and determination to design exceptional residences that meet the strictest Complying Development process standards.
